Washington Lawyers’ Committee Selects Cohen Milstein for 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award

June 22, 2016

The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs has named Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll a recipient of its 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award.  The award recognizes law firms and individuals who are committed to equal justice and pro bono service, and who have undertaken work of special significance with the Committee over the past year.

Cohen Milstein was recognized for its work with the Fair Housing Project in Equal Rights Center v. Equity Residential et al.  In April 2016, the U. S. District Court for the District of Maryland ruled that Equity Residential, the nation’s largest developer of multi-family housing, must comply with the Fair Housing Act by ensuring that properties are accessible to people with disabilities before they are occupied, not afterwards.  The court further ruled that developers cannot avoid compliance with the Fair Housing Act simply by transferring properties to another company following development.

The award was presented to Cohen Milstein attorneys Joseph M. Sellers and Shaylyn Cochran at the 2016 Wiley A. Branton Luncheon on Wednesday, June 22, 2016.
