The Burton Awards, an annual awards program run in association with the Library of Congress, recognizes the most outstanding published legal analysis or article written by lawyers across the nation.
Cohen Milstein lawyers Julie Goldsmith Reiser, Raymond M. Sarola, and Molly J. Bowen were honored to be selected to receive the The Burton Awards’ 2019 Law360 Distinguished Legal Writing Award – Law Firm for their Bloomberg Law article “INSIGHT: Holding Firearms Dealers Accountable for Online Straw Sales” (December 19, 2018).
The article examines Estate of Kirsten Englund v. World Pawn Exchange et al., No: 16-cv-598 (Coos Cty. Circuit Court), a wrongful death lawsuit of first impression in Oregon state court and nationally, addressing the legal liability for federally licensed firearms dealers involved in online straw sales and the resulting first-in-the-nation rulings and settlement.
The lawsuit was brought on behalf of the family of the victim, Kirsten Englund, by Cohen Milstein and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
The Burton Award submissions are judged by leading law school professors and other prominent leaders in the legal profession.
