Kalpana Kotagal Discusses the Inclusion Rider and Other Strategies for Workplace Diversity on The Jabot Podcast
September 11, 2020
Back in 2018 at the Academy Awards ceremony, Francis McDormand called attention to something called an inclusion rider as a way to increase diversity in Hollywood during her acceptance speech for Best Actress. In the latest episode of The Jabot podcast, host Kathryn Rubino chats with Kalpana Kotagal, partner at Cohen Milstein, and co-author of the Hollywood “inclusion rider.”
The conversation covers what it is like to have your work suddenly thrust onto the national stage, the importance of networking, how the principles behind the rider can be applied to other industries (particularly the legal industry), and practical tips for dealing with inequality in the workplace.
The Jabot podcast is an offshoot of the Above the Law brand focused on the challenges women, people of color, LGBTQIA, and other diverse populations face in the legal industry. The name comes from none other than the Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the jabot (decorative collar) she wears when delivering dissents from the bench. It’s a reminder that even when we aren’t winning, we’re still a powerful force to be reckoned with.
