National Spine & Pain Centers and Physical Medicine Associates, which have pain management clinics in Glen Allen, Northern Virginia and Fredericksburg, have agreed to pay approximately $3.3 million to settle civil fraud allegations, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

The settlement resolves allegations the clinics billed Medicare and other federal health care providers for services performed by physician assistants and nurse practitioners as if physicians had provided the services, submitted improper claims for urine drug tests, and ordered unnecessary urine drug tests.

The settlement resolves a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by a former Physical Medicine Associates physician assistant under the whistleblower provisions of the False Claims Act, the government said.
