A multistate pain management group and its affiliate agreed to pay $3.8 million to settle allegations they fraudulently billed Medicare and other government programs for services not rendered.
The Department of Justice announced April 25 that Virginia-based Physical Medicine Associates Ltd. and its parent, National Spine & Pain Centers LLC, agreed to settle false claims allegations initially brought by a former employee, Michelle O’Connor.

For her role in bringing the case, O’Connor will receive $592,656 in addition to getting legal costs reimbursed. She was represented in the matter by Jeanne Markey, Casey Preston, and Gary Azorsky with the law offices of Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll in Philadelphia and William Atkinson and David E. Haynes with The Cochran Firm in Washington.
“This settlement is a positive achievement for patients and taxpayers, and I’m grateful for the government’s commitment to securing a just resolution,” O’Connor said in a statement provided to Bloomberg Law by her attorneys.
