Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC, one of the nation’s largest and most diverse plaintiffs’ complex litigation law firms, announces the launch of Fighting Fraud For America, a blog created by the firm’s Whistleblower/False Claims Act Practice Group. The blog provides commentary on current issues in whistleblower actions, including those brought under the federal False Claims Act, and the false claims statutes of states and municipalities.
Fighting Fraud For America is spearheaded by Cohen Milstein Partners Gary Azorsky and Jeanne Markey, Co-chairs of the Firm’s Whistleblower/False Claims Act Practice. They will address major developments in actions under the False Claims Act, SEC, IRS, and CFTC Whistleblower programs. Their insights are based on decades of experience successfully pursuing whistleblower cases in the health care, pharmaceutical, and financial services industries, as well as in other industries that transact business with the government.
The False Claims Act and its state and local counterparts impose treble damages and other civil penalties against any business or person that commits fraud in connection with a request for payment submitted to the government. Individuals who blow the whistle on fraud by bringing lawsuits under the False Claims Act stand to receive an award of up to 30 percent of the recovery ultimately obtained by the government.
“The success of the False Claims Act depends on individuals coming forward with their knowledge of fraud on the government, and this blog aims to educate the public on the array of scenarios in which fraud can arise, and how they can become whistleblowers and join us in the fight against fraud,” said Jeanne Markey.
