As one of co-lead counsel, Cohen Milstein negotiated a settlement of a class action which alleged that certain Philips and Magnavox plasma televisions suffered from a defect that caused internal components (called capacitors) to prematurely fail, resulting in the televisions becoming inoperable.  The settlement approved by the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey provided that qualifying settlement class members who purchased new or received as a gift new specified Philips or Magnavox plasma televisions, could receive as much as a $65 cash payment or a voucher for the greater of 80 percent of the television’s trade-in value or the amount paid to repair the television up to $160.
